A New Home - Una casa nueva

BASIC LEVEL -

Francisco stands outside his new house. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the key. He turns the key in the lock and opens the door. He steps into the living room and looks around. The paint is peeling off the walls. There is no furniture. The house is dirty and smells bad. He tries to open a window but it is broken. The house does not have a kitchen or a bedroom but there is a microwave on the floor on one side of the room. He wonders if it works. The place looks terrible but it is all he can afford. He covers his nose and mouth with his hand and opens the bathroom door. It is in bad condition.

Francisco está parado afuera de su nueva casa. Él alcanza su bolsillo y saca la llave. Voltea la llave en la cerradura y abre la puerta. Él entra a la sala y mira alrededor. La pintura se está desprendiendo de las paredes. No hay muebles. La casa está sucia y huele mal. Trata de abrir una ventana pero está dañada. La casa no tiene una cocina o un dormitorio, pero hay un microondas en el piso a un lado del cuarto. Él se pregunta si éste funciona. El lugar se ve terrible, pero es todo lo que él se puede permitir comprar. Él se cubre la nariz y la boca con su mano y abre la puerta del baño. ¡Está en muy mala condición!

1. Éste es un apartamento de lujo. / This is a luxury apartment.
   

2. No puedo pagar la renta. / I cannot afford the rent.
   

3. El dueño me quiere desalojar. / My landlord wants to evict me.
   

4. Los otros inquilinos son muy ruidosos. / The other tenants are very noisy.
   

5. Tenemos que vender nuestra antigua casa antes de poder comprar la nueva. / We have to sell our old house before we can buy the new one.
   

6. Soy el dueño pero no tengo ningún seguro. / I am the owner but I don’t have any insurance.
   

7. Ellos viven en el quinto piso. / They live on the fifth floor.
   

8. El elevador/ascensor no funciona. / The elevator doesn’t work.
   

9. La plomería necesita ser arreglada. / The plumbing needs to be fixed.
   

10. No tenemos televisión de cable. Sólo escuchamos la radio. / We don’t have cable TV. We just listen to the radio.
    

11. ¿Por qué tiene una chimenea? ¡Usted vive en Miami! / Why do you have a fireplace? You live in Miami!
    

12. La sala está desordenada. / The living room is a mess.
    

13. No tenemos un comedor. / We don’t have a dining room.
    

14. La casa tiene seis dormitorios y cuatro baños. / The house has six bedrooms and four bathrooms.
    

15. No puedo encontrar nada de comida en tu nevera. / I cannot find any food in your refrigerator
    

16. No tenemos aire acondicionado. Sólo tenemos ventiladores. / We don’t have air conditioning. We only have fans.
    

17. Está helado y ellos no prenden la calefacción. / It is freezing and they won’t turn on the heating.
    

18. Ellos nunca barren el piso o aspiran el tapete. / They never sweep the floor or vacuum the carpet.
    

19. Ellos tienen una silla y un sofá. El resto de nosotros tenemos que sentarnos en el piso. / They have one chair and one couch. The rest of us have to sit on the floor.
    

20. Las puertas siempre están con seguro en la noche. / The doors are always locked at night.
    

21. ¡No entres! Me estoy cambiando. / Don’t come in! I am changing.
    

22. La lavadora de platos no funciona. Déjame ayudarte con los platos. / The dishwasher doesn’t work. Let me help you with the dishes.
